You are all very welcome to this year’s Folkrättsdag/International Law Day in Stockholm on 20 November with pre-conference the day before.
If you have not registered yet, do so via a registration form, which is found here.
The keynote speaker will be Anne Orford, University of Melbourne and the holder of the Olof Palme Visiting Professorship 2024.
A first novelty on the format for this year is a pre-conference workshop 19th November on “International law and autonomy in military systems” and discussion about “Law, War and Letter writing (in Sweden)”, 19th November.
A second novelty for this year is that each university will present what they are working on via posters. The posters will be available at the conference venue and there will be opportunity for the participants to discuss with representatives of the universities.

Workshop on “International law and autonomy in military systems”
TIME: 13.00-16.30
VENUE: Aula Magna-building, Frescati, Stockholm University, Hall: Mimer
Discussion regarding autonomous functions in military systems have received considerable debate in international law, and Swedish practitioners and researchers are making their own important contributions on the development and use of these systems. The workshop is designed to bring together academics and researchers interested in autonomy in military systems from a legal perspective. The aim is to discuss the use of autonomous systems in a holistic manner covering the whole timeframe of use of autonomous functions in military operations.
The first session therefore focuses on ongoing regulatory efforts. The second session focuses on the use of artificial intelligence in military operations, and the third session concerns responsibility for the use of autonomous functions in military operations. The workshop finishes with a summary of conclusions and reflections from senior academics in the field of international law.

We occasionally ask each other to draft and sign opinion pieces and open letters. This is an informal seminar to critically reflect on the use of legal expertise in the context of war. If you are interested in attending the seminar, please send an email to markus.gunneflo@jur.lu.se. In response you will receive an article (“Law, War and Letter Writing” by Chiam, Cormier and Hood) that was recently published in the European Journal of International Law, along with some questions. At the seminar, we intend to discuss letter writing and use of legal expertise in the context of war in general and in Sweden in particular.
Conveners: Markus Gunneflo, Gregor Noll and Love Rönnelid
