When Sweden acceded to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in March 2024, the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs stated that the membership in the organization “is an epoch-making event for our country and entails a profound and immediate change in Sweden’s foreign-and security policy.” Please join us on November 26 for a discussion of legal aspects of the NATO membership, including issues of collective self-defence in the Washington Treaty, developments in the domestic legal system, and defence cooperation.

Opening Address: Jacob Westberg, Associate Professor in War Studies at the Swedish Defence University, on Idealism and Realism in Sweden’s Security Strategies Before and After the NATO Membership.
Speakers:
Jann Kleffner, Professor of International Law at the Swedish Defence University, will address implications for collective self-defence and article 5 of the Washington Treaty;
Pål Wrange, Professor of International Law at Stockholm University and Director of SCILJ, will address the Defence Cooperation Agreement between Sweden and the United States;
Marika Ericson, Head of the Department of International and Operational Law at the Swedish Defence University, will address developments in the domestic legal system. The discussion will be followed by Q&A.
